How effective is TO as a beat stick, though? Most of the effectiveness of overturning rejections hinges on a Requester simply being a good part of the ecosystem. TO doesn't give workers any actual tangible power. IRBs do. The personal ethics & morals of a Requester do. TO just gives people a place to Grinch as far as I can tell?

When has TO as an entity ever stepped in and actually done something in the last 2 years (I'm not shitting on them, I'm being serious, it isn't their job or responsibility to do so but it highlights the point)? I think the impact of giving nameless, faceless workers the ability to scream obscenities into a black hole is really overstated nowadays.

Way back when users could rely on it to provide an earnest head's up on bad requesters I have no problems giving it its due, but those days are long since past (not to say it isn't a valid concern they return). The metrics for what constitutes "bad" there is "did something I did not like" - its not objectively evaluating the business operations of the requester or anything about the transaction its fully "I feel" which is completely unsustainable. To me, as a worker, it means that right now that platform exists to allow other workers to self suppress their own (& others) wages far too often by giving people who are largely ignorant of how to actually make money on the platform the ability to not only broadcast whatever horrible opinions go through their brain but speak it directly to other workers who are equally as ignorant & cause them to abandon work that is perfectly safe to do.

Obviously 2 things here: the hourly attached to the work & a worker's effective hourly earnings & I get some people think TV is inaccurate because they don't correlate.. but..

I think as a baseline, Requesters should aim to pay the minimum hourly wage of the highest waged state in the USA right now. I think that should go up with time. That is the minimum I find acceptable from IRB approved studies. The current standard of $7.25 needs to come up. If a researcher finds that unpalatable they need to re-evaluate the value their research provides to the world since apparently no one will fund it. Far too many come in & advance their own careers under the current standards & extract value disproportionate to what they put into the ecosystem.

As far as what a worker can expect as an effective wage.. idk. If a user treats themselves as a business & take MTurk seriously, they should be able to expect a fair reward for the time invested. But a platform like TO or TV can't force people to do that because its a mentality thing first & foremost. Most workers would rather sit on their thumbs & make $0 than invest $5 in themselves to make $10. Workers are "exploited" as much as they because, frankly, most of them are horrible business entities and so fail to excel on a business platform.

I say this tongue in cheek but its a big part of the problem: MTurk & Requesters are playing chess while half of us are eating glue lol. Honestly if it weren't for the fact most academic requesters simply have souls & a conscious majority of workers would be really screwed here.
This is really where people's emotions cause them to diverge from reality re: rejections.

Rejections, as a % of impact on your personal earnings, are not where your "business" is losing money. What matters is work availability & time spent on the intangibles of actually getting work put in front of you to complete it. Even academic studies, especially those who collect their dataset from workers who are poor performers on the platform, echo this & have for years but workers are so hung up on rejections they remain completely blind to where they are actually losing money.

No one should chase a rejection, ever. We need to build efficient business processes on our end the same way MTurk & Requesters have had them built for them.

@A6_Foul_Out I'm not going back to quote it but messaged. And also while yes I will DM anytime its necessary polite, helpful posts like the ones y'all responded with are still helpful (even if annoyingly repetitive) since users who happen to be sitting around reading do pick them up.

anywho gonna go work in breaking stuff now that I wrote a book, if the forum dies remember me fondly.

I once spent a month chasing down an 80 cent rejection. To me it's personal. (it's also what I do inbetween HITs when there's nothing else to watch on YouTube)
