They didn't tell me, it was just a general audit of my taxes. I have a few jobs, and I'm working from a home office- I had to show proof of everything down to my expenses and my office space and my electric bill- it was annoying AF. I was ultimately fine because my taxes were correct, but I woulda gotten railed hardcore if I had fudged something. My tax dude thinks it was my home office deduction that possibly had me flagged, but I'll never actually know! They just wanted to verify my info was correct, it could have been completely random, bullshit luck.

the home office deduction is the most likely to trigger an audit and also the one with some of the strictest rules about using. i have tried to tell people this a couple times after a bunch of people on a past forum all said they were going to claim it but no one listened to me

source: my aunt did tax filing for 25+ years at H&R block

Doesn't H&R block mostly hire people that barely know what they are doing? I mean I agree with you but...

Unsolicited opinion but if you have $2000+ in Amazon Payments because you like seeing $$$$ in the account, you're far better off to set up an HYSA and at least let it sit at 2% interest

I'm sure they know more about what they're doing after 25+ years of filing taxes than some smartass on the Internet.

Some people. It would sound better if you just say 'tax professional for 25 years'. Attaching H&R block to that is a discredit to your aunt most likely.

I take it that you haven't ever been into those stores and just are trying to be witty?

A majority of their employees just know how to get through the software and that is enough for most people.

Yeah, my tax dude (well, the farm's tax dude who looked over everything for me) was thinking that was the probable reason but said it could have been a variety of things or just chance and not to sweat it, because my ducks were in order. The rules have changed pretty recently with home office stuff too, and I'm sure a lot of folks miss the whole part where it has to be a "separately identifiable space used exclusively for business," thing and try and use their living room as a home office. Nope nope nope. I'm full on sweating thinking about how that would have ended. NOPE NOPE NOPE. HARD PASS.
