Ah. good to know. But for me five fans add up to NOISY COMPUTER. Because those other fans aren't quiet, either.

Tho, the fan that is going out is REALLY LOUD when it's acting up. So the other ones seem super quiet in comparison.

I only buy in on months with games that I'm decently sure I'll at least consider playing. Saves tons of money and my Steam library is still easy enough to browse through with 350+ games.

It has more to do with the fans running at 100% with high RPM fans than the number of fans really. Having a bunch of fans hooked up to the motherboard so that the pc controls them to prevent them being crazy loud.

Well shit. Now I'm going to open up his computer again next time he's off of it and see if there are more fan plugs. Because if pluging them into the motherboard makes them quieter, I'm rerouting some fan cables.

Now I have a headache. I hate computers.

More accurately, I love computers. I hate that my brain takes so long to figure this stuff out, but at least I'm confident I can replace a case fan now.

Back to The Brady Bunch and my nostalgia (and to be clear, I was born in 1968 so nowhere near old enough to have been an adult when this was filmed, but growing up so many adults had clothes and cars and furniture like in TBB and I miss that! )

It is more that plugging in via the motherboard allows the PC to control the speed and only ramp up the speed when it is needed. I believe that you can put a resistor or something like that between the molex and the fan to slow it down by dropping the voltage but I can't remember what those are called and I don't know if amazon even sells them.
It is mostly that working on those prebuilt computers are always a headache. You wouldn't be having nearly as many problems with a self built computer most likely.

Back to Molex it is, lol.

And yes, back in the day when I built my first one it was much easier. Well, I bought a used computer. I fried the graphics card while upgrading RAM (don't ask, there was smoke, again, don't ask...lol...) This was in the day where they were all upgradable as there wasn't much out there. I made like four trips to Fry's to buy new, upgraded parts that my motherboard would support. Got the best I could get back then, the most RAM, fastest hard drive and (don't laugh) fastest modem. Didn't seem that complicated back then.
