I'm glad you know them, they are big but that was a long time ago. Those 3 and 4-piece groups really give a lot of drummers a chance to take part, get musical. I was watching that doc on Ginger, 'Beware Mr Baker', then I read a book about tribal drumming. No one could figure it out, but it wasn't a code, it was speech.

And as I kid I always thought Baker 'talked', he was words with the drums. And well, it turns out his first foray into the city ended up with him listening to old African tribal drums his mentor had on album.

That's not me being a genius and getting it, it's Ginger Baker being a genius and making me get it.

I won't name drop anymore, most people don't know Densmore or Mitch Mitchell, but fans do. 90s ain't bad, always said Grohl was the best musician in that group when he was really over-shadowed back then.

Ummmm.... it was a book NOT related to African tribal drumming... it was a like a science narrative anthology like The Discoverers or A Short Hisotry of Nearly Everything but it was NOT one of those two....

I don't know.

It was a British guy who figured it out. The tribes said that one of them must have travelled to England and fathered him. And no one could it out b/c they were speaking different languages, while within drum-range in the jungle. So no one figured it could be speech but it was close enough between each tribe that the drums *were* a language even though speaking, villagers would be unable to communicate!

It was absolutely brilliant adaptation and the discovery by the British dude, and once he figured it out they started teaching him and he was kid-level with the drum-speaking but then he died, then all the tribes got wiped out of course and now that's all gone, all gone.

I'll keep an eye on it I can remember all that but not the book, maybe it'll come to me.

Maybe I'm an ass and I read it on wikipedia? I don't know I thought it was a book within the last few years that I read.
