The press on my track pad feels totally wrong and nasty. I've used one with the button and it felt half way decent but still not as good as a mouse click.

Maybe I just have unusually long thumbs then because I can click the button below the trackpad just fine without too much movement or taking my hands off the keyboard.

But I'm still curious....are you hovering your mouse pointer over where you would need to click whenever you were done typing whatever? Because I'm still failing to see how you wouldn't already have your hands near or over your trackpad already.

 

To be fair I bought a gaming laptop and I didn't even bother looking at the trackpad because I have no intention of ever using it.

We all have preferences. I put a lot of value on very minimal movement with no pivot to click

 

I think that more effort is put into trackpads of ultrabook class laptops than gaming laptops because of the expected usecase.

Gamers will plug in a mouse but ultrabook users will likely use the trackpad so it being good matters.

 

I'm not? It's a 7th gen i7 with 16gb of ram and a 1070 6Gb video card. It runs just fine. It beats the alternative to playing on my desktop in the bedroom while the wife is sleeping and having to be very quiet and never being able to online voice chat.

I feel a little better about my machine, then. I mean, it's plugged in 99% of the time. But when I do take it on adventures I'm bothered by the lack of screen space, the non-mechanical keyboard, the lackluster sound, the missing macro keys... the trackpad click never even crossed my mind.

That's still not answering my question fully, though.
If you're already using your trackpad to place your pointer, I see how it can be a preference MAYBE but like....your hands are already there so does it matter if they are right below the keyboard or not? Unless you're preemptively placing the pointer where you would need to click before typing....
