I totally agree that a lot of people have money issues because they just won't take the steps to fix the situation, being in poverty for a long time creates a mindset that can make it difficult to get oneself out of it.

I read some research (and listened to a talk about it) a while ago and while I cannot remember the exact name they used, there is research to show that someone who has been poor for a long time, who can't always meet basic needs, gets evicted, doesn't have enough food, etc., has changes that go on in their brain/thinking that make it difficult for them to make good choices if they do come into money. Because they have experienced "famine" for so long, if they do get a job with a paycheck or a bonus or a tax refund they will often run out and spend it all, stocking up on all kinds of items, some they might not "need" as relief from the famine, with no long term planning for the future, so they find themselves right back in famine again in the future.

I should try and find what I'm referring to. It was really interesting and opened up my mind to a thought process I've been fortunate enough to not experience (despite being pretty poor at stages of my life, and wondering if I could even pay the rent this month or was I going to get kicked out). It also helps with my job because I deal with people who are chronically poor a lot.

I will tell you, though, those people usually manage to keep their rent paid. I'm currently in the process of kicking someone out who makes over 220K per year and cannot keep the rent paid. smdh.

but they get fired if they do step in already.. gotta pick a direction here >.> trying to find decent places to live school district wise is stressful AF
This seems like a fine priority list :dunno:

don't forget the added hardship of growing up poor under a poor money mindset parent. I'm having to relearn how I even look at money or food. It gives me such a panic attack at times figuring everything out because I simply wasn't taught ANYTHING about money. Hell, my parents hid how much things cost from me as a kid 'because kids don't need to know'

I started buying them when I lived in my apartment in SC, so Ive been picking them up since 2015ish probably? And I'm guessing they were around long before that. They have them at TJ Maxx and Marshalls, too! I've seen similar ones the past couple years, but not the exact one and it's peeved me. I have mourned George.

Speaking of water costs and laws n shit.... I was close to doing life in San Quentin last week after the heavy rains I had at least 100 gallons of illegal rain water that collected in tubs out on the deck. I am fucking lucky someone didn't call Gavin Newsom and nail me.

This. Teachers are freaking damned if they do damned if they don't. I respect teachers a lot. As a matter of fact when I go to conferences I ask the teachers what we can do to help my son's education because I prefer to be active in my child's learning.

Yep. If you weren't taught how to manage money, you have to teach yourself or get stuck in that exact same cycle.

Parents think they are protecting kids, and up to a certain age hell yes we should. However, by (in my opinion) 10-11 years old kids should start understanding budgets and household expenses. I show my kid the bills often. When he found out how much money I take in every month with the main job, turking and the rental his eyes got huge and he thought we were RICH. Then I showed him the two mortgages I pay, the w/s/g bills for both places, etc., etc., and he saw what was left over to spend on food and extras, he realized we are far, far from rich. So far, my kiddo is great with money. I'm proud of him.

Dontcha just love when the holier than thou play armchair sociologist and explain why the dirty poors are so poor?

Much less commentary about hedge fund parasites and corporate raiders who amass wealth through job destruction and financial speculation and then use every loophole to avoid taxation. Nope, it's the trailer trash and ghetto scum that are bringing us down! :flail:

It reeks of lower middle-class insecurity. People who are terrified of being poor and need to feel righteous and superior.

If you are in CA enjoy prison if you don't get the proper permits and pay the fees and taxes to use that rain that the state owns.
