A recent article in Wired Magazine entitled, “A Bot Panic Hits Amazon’s Mechanical Turk,” levels a serious critique at MTurk requesters. Panos Ipeirotis, a data scientist at NYU, has found that the Turker population is just as representative as university undergraduates for survey populations, and the data could be just as reliable as long as people took proper precautions in designing their studies.



As for bot work, experts say that researchers are on the hook if they have a problem here: they can avoid problems by setting up their surveys with stringent parameters and designing tasks that are difficult to automate. “Most people are, by now, smart enough to deal with noise that comes from workers that do not pay attention, or from bots,” Ipeirotis says.



The New Scientist subsequently wrote an article entitled, “Bots on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk are ruining Psychology Studies.”



In both articles, it is noted that the poor quality of exists because researchers fail to design their studies carefully. Alternately, poor data quality may be caused by the low pay given to complete tasks, which creates pressure to complete more HITs in a shorter amount of time.
