    Hi all! How's Monday?

Weekend was full over here. We took feral kittehs into the shelter to be fixed and then released back to where they were trapped on Saturday. We helped the kitteh tribe in our area be more healthy, yay! I wanted to adopt all the scared, sweet felines, even the ones who you could tell were truly crazy. They were so scared!

Sunday was yardwork and I have to admit to a huge parenting fail on my part. I left to run errands and kiddo was finishing up the front yard (mow, trim, rake, etc.). When he was done, he put away all the gear into the garage (which is clear in my back yard) as he is supposed to do, then put the padlock on the gate that leads to our back yard from the front yard/carport. He then went to go inside and realized both back doors were locked, so he had trapped himself in the back yard (you can't hop the fence that he padlocked as it is directly under the carport roof and there is less than 12" clearance between fence top and roof bottom).

There is, however, a 4' high chain link between me and my neighbor's yard, and kiddo knew the front door was unlocked. All he had to do was hop fence into that neighbor's yard and let himself out her gate which is never locked (this is the house that kiddo takes care of when she is on vacation, so he knows her house well as she's gone like 10 weeks every year).

He spent 30 mins trying to hop a 4' high chain link fence and couldn't do it due to...uh...no place to "rest" that isn't pokey in the boys area while swinging a leg over.

Yes, I've failed in teaching my kid to hop fences. I could hop that fence in 5 seconds and I'm old with bad hips but I got skillz I learned as a free roaming child from the 70s who often had to run away from situations fast.

Wonder if it's too late to teach him to hop a fence?

And I plan on teasing him about this for a very long time.

Reminds me of when I was a kid there was about a 3' fence separating our yard and the neighbors and my friend and I decided to see if we could run and clear it. We were not much taller than the fence at the time and my friend when first and got a huge run build up and sprinted at it only to make it about half way over and got caught on the fence hanging upside down. The rest of us were laughing so hard he just kinda hung there for five minutes until we helped him down

That's the kind of stuff I did as a kid, as well as find myself in areas that I shouldn't have been in that had big dogs and we had to clear fences FAST.

That taught skills that could come in handy in later years! Though, no one paid us any attention back then, so we learned lots of things we didn't need to know, too, lol.

My mom just asked me why he didn't get one of the ladders from the garage and put that over the fence. I'm going to tease him about that hard tonight. I worry about his problem solving skills, lol.

Or you can teach him to pick locks and/or how to break in through a window.
I've had to crawl through a few windows in my day.

As a young kid I once "ran away from home". I tried to climb the fence with my bicycle. It was a good 30 minutes of my parents hiding laughter before I gave up. It never occurred to me to chuck the bike over first. My problem-solving skills have improved...a bit.

I knew a guy who tried to jump a tall fence, and ended up tearing his ballsack open when it got caught. His dad was the closest doctor, and no shit, this kid had to deal with his dad taking care of his badly damaged sack on the way to the hospital. Scarred for life in 2 ways!

I'm probably going to jinx myself, but it's nearly impossible to break in through our windows. They are 1950s old metal crank outs. They have the crank which has to be turned to open them, plus a second lock that is in the middle that anchors them closed. They are teeny tiny panes of windows that make up a grid of a larger window with metal in between each pane.

I once had a cop tell me those windows are pretty "safe" so I'm never replacing them even though they're single pane windows.

He needs to learn to hop a friggin' fence. I'm going to lock him in the back yard more often, lol.
