college textbooks are such a fucking scam, especially the digital ones. or the classes where professors make you buy the textbook that they wrote. You can occasionally find international editions for cheaper or through other less legal means

Well, this book is only available with an access code that has to be typed in online the first day of class. This is an online class. I don't even know the NAME of the book, publisher, edition, etc.

I'm unclear how to pirate a book that can only be seen with an access code.

Not to mention, my kid just turned 15. at this point in his life, I'd rather teach him to do things honestly and not prime the teenage brain to do things illegally. Should he find a way to acquire textbooks once he's an adult an in college full time, I'm fine with that. But I do think a parent has a responsibility to set a higher standard (I know I will be disagreed with on this stance in this instance, that's fine...)

 

That is pretty much what I do......we almost always finish month between 3-6 TB, it's more now with kid home from college.

 

Hopefully when I move I will have a better ISP but yeah comcast sux

 

That's how I feel. But nope, $180 for the code to access an unknown to us book (until we type in the code first day of class).

 

A bit over a year, and that is in a room the furthest from it, I should test my wifi when I'm closer...you can get super far away from it and still get full bars which well never happened before.

 

It's fair though!

 

What I am getting at more, is often the professor is required to list a book as "required." Then on the first day they tell you a cheaper way to get it or that it is useless. Had so many "required" books that the professor didn't even open. It's a huge scam.

 

Welcome to college life. I remember very rarely being able to rent/buy used. Either my prof required the latest edition that came out that year (i.e. scarce to find used) or you needed an access code for MATLAB/various other digital/online platforms to even complete your assignments.

I'mma point out that if he's the author or co-author of the book it's super likely a scam to 'require' the book to up his sales. Husband had a professor do that on a $340 book.
I say if you can avoid getting the book and on the first day of class ask *if you can talk to any other students or look online* for the name of it after people have registered for it. Then pirate it. I really really doubt he'll use the book on the VERY first day even if it is really required.

Even that's questionable.

 

The noratan for 4.99 had a lot of typing but honestly was probably worth it, only took about 15 minutes.

 

I laughed and returned it.

Pros:
Fairly easy survey, took a few minutes.

Cons:
Abysmally low pay. Then after completing it and being given a code the page automatically redirects to a screened out page before you can copy the code!! Trying to cheat us out of the measly 3 cents is just ridiculous.
