True. I'm thankful my son is going to a community college the first two years and everything was paid for with grants and scholarships, books included. I REALLY did not want him to accumulate debt.

Community college is usually cheap enough to avoid debt. I always tell kids from the school I work at to consider taking some of their basic classes at the city colleges. They are like $400 a class and transferable to just about any college in the country.

This is through a community college and the tuition is free because he's still in high school and they have a special program for dual enrollment. Unfortunately, this program doesn't cover books.

However, I am hopeful that this class that he's taking to meet college application requirements will also count as a GE when he's in college, so yay...it will be worth my money!! (We are hoping he will go straight to a UC and get grants and scholarships and such, but if that doesn't work out, he will go to a junior college and then transfer later for his Bachelor's.)

Exactly! He is doing that the first two years and then transferring. He will have enough money left over from here to help pay for the next two years at a bigger college.

I just have to say, that while I'm not rich (duh, surprised? I turk...) I CAN afford this for my kid. I'm still paying back my student loans and I do NOT want that for my child. I started his 529 plan the year he was born to help avoid him acquiring debt.

He's considering becoming a teacher, so I've told him he should get a Master's to have better options and pay, so he might get some debt for that, but that is worth it in the higher wages he can earn, plus he can teach at community colleges with a Master's.

What breaks my heart is all those kids out there who want an education but don't have parents who can/are willing to afford a $180 textbook and financial aid doesn't cover it all (so, so many people fall into this trap!) and they end up either not going to college or graduating with so much debt.

Do they even let people teach without their master's there? Pretty sure it is required here, at least all my teachers had one.
