Well, I mean, they don't have to. Some people don't like being amused.

You know Cracked pays like, $150 or something per article? Gotta love someone who knows how to squeeze every penny from the Internets. Well, I mean, if not for the soulless, scammy, heartless, --- wait, I'm not getting paid by the word. :p

Abso-freaking-lutely can, I even had a list of costs going early on that I meant to post but forgot about it after a while.. I will say that realistically though the biggest cost has been time not add-ons & stuff. Its one of those things when I was on the other side of it (see the HN debate on MTG) I was like "no fracking way you're not making a profit" - now I can confirm, no way on God's green earth is HN a good use of @Kadauchi's time haha.

The server itself is $40/mo and so long as I don't ignore weekly maintenance seems capable of holding the site for the foreseeable future (what happened yesterday was a result of not rebooting something on it after I had diddled a bit). The next upgrade size, however, is $80/mo so that kind of sucks if/when it comes to it lol. You can check out the pricing schemes here: https://www.digitalocean.com/pricing/
    XenForo is $140 flat + $40/yr [here]
    $10/mo for CMS

    One time/yearly things:
$24.50/yr for the dark theme (Cyber Monday sale, baby! was $35, I'm such a frugal forum owner LOL) [here]
$35/yr for the light theme (paid full price for this, I'm a sucker :() [here]
$25 (one time) for post ratings add-on [here]
    $12/yr for the domain [here]

There are a couple other add-ons/licenses I'm in for that I can go look up but that was the list I had before giving up and figuring I was never going to "break even" anyway LOL.

I've said it on MTG and I'll say it here: I think donating to a forum is weird dude. Wont treat anyone different for sending me money, wont treat anyone differently for not sending me money. Site will probably run the same either way, I'm not trying to guilt trip anyone or illicit donations through "oh my god server costs are so high!" bullshit because honestly its not true lol. The site costs ~$60-75/mo to keep alive & running as-is, if I chose to develop features for it I'm an adult and can handle the consequences of that being "unpaid" time. OTOH if other consenting adults want to throw money at me for it I absolutely love and support them for feeding me tacos LOL.

I totally support full transparency re: site costs/stuff. If anyone ever has questions about it don't hesitate to ask 'cause I don't care / am not offended lol. If you're on the fence between giving money to TurkerHub or buying a double cheeseburger, you can bet your back end my opinion is go for the burger.

Edit: Whoops, mixed a funny w/ a serious post.. my bad.

Discussion - how do you fight off the mind-numbing and the crashing? Sitting a computer room with gray outside my windows kills my motivation sometimes. How do you "get in the zone?"

Lots of coffee. Way too much coffee. And nicotine. And other things that will soon be legal in my state.

That is correct. I believe.. unless I am mistaken that requesters have the ability (not sure how often it is used) to hide hits completely unless you have the qual. Sergey isn't actually an example of that but you got the idea.

I just got an attempted ransomware site on those Hubspot HITs. Not worth the three cents.

No. He was a mod on MTG, claimed to be a doctor, and then faked his suicide. A lot of us didn't believe a word he ever said to begin with. He had many people trust him with personal information (medical information), and many people felt guilty about his suicide and that they "didn't do more to help him." People here needed closure about losing their online friend who was a disgusting, pathetic fraud.
