More seriously, it's a simple way to remove auto-updates without needing to pay more.

 

Perfectly understandable. I have however been personally burned by windows shutting down to update while in the middle of preparing a talk the day before with unsaved (not a lot, like 15-30min) work, so I disabled it everywhere I could.

 

I got my pro version for free from college and lol @ paying full price for windows.

 

Rarely happens to me. Usually happens when I log off, which is totally fine with me.

My college only gave the Home edition I think. And I never needed it anyway (still prefer 7).

I know and it makes me so sad! I'm honestly not sure what I'll do. Windows 10 isn't too bad on my desktop (other than a couple issues, like MTS crashing on my old FF, auto-updates and stuff like that). But I had all sorts of wild issues when I installed it on my laptop (which is why I downgraded after a bit).

 

Laptop drivers are such a shitshow sometimes. That is mostly on whomever made your laptop though and not windows 10.

 

Possibly, but everything hit the fan at the same time. I was preparing a seminar for my PhD (after recently upgrading to Win 10, laptop) and the hard drive crashed. I lost a bunch a results (last back-up was like two months prior). Did some data recovery, recovered most of my data, but was not a fun moment and I just thought "screw this, I'm not taking any chances anymore. Never had a problem with Win7, go to Win10, drive crashes within the month". Granted, it's highly probable it was all coincidence and Win10 had nothing to do with it, but I didn't want to gamble my thesis.

 

much like the old school nokia phones, windows 3.11 never gave me any issues.

I have access to storage space on one of the biggest super-computers with my lab, so I can do manual back-ups (sadly, it's not automatic). And I'm aware of backblaze, but I'm broke and can't afford "all" the things that I should/want (I know they're pretty cheap with only $6/month, but still, all of these subscription fees can add-up).

And I'm not sure whether there's a total space limit with them, but lab data can be pretty big (such as confocal microscope images and MS data).

If you backup from a windows machine backblaze doesn't have a limit but it is per a device.

 

I thought I had read somewhere there was a 10GB limit (maybe for the free trial or something like that).
