I've never had Durian. However, I read that although the smell is quite pungent and unpleasant, the taste is quite good. Not everyone agrees, but many who pre-judged the fruit based on smell alone, then tasted it, actually liked it.

Sort of like, judging brie or camembert or gouda or any kind of cheese on smell rather than taste, it seems.
