the free 1 that came with my desktop computer is my best by far. I've gone through others and eventually went back to that 1, glad I never threw it away!

Do you have a preference for the keyboard color (black or white), do you want mechanical and if there is LEDs, do you mind just turning them off?

Low profile as in those shitty laptop keys? (scissor switches)

If he needs to look at his keyboard to type a lot of RGB keyboards need the light on to be legible.

Color doesn't matter, don't mind backlighting if I can make it not puke colors at me. Mechanical is fine, but I do very much prefer a short throw key like "those shitty laptop keys"

They are called scissor switches. You can just look it up on amazon.

They do suck though outside of looking nice and being good for laptops for space reasons.

I know what they're called. Thank you for explaining to me why what I prefer to use sucks.

I'd be up for trying a low profile mechanical if I could find one that seemed decent enough. But they're a niche market it seems.

Depends on local lighting. In a dark room, agreed. In a fully light room, it should be fine.

Logitech typically makes reasonable products, although I'm not familiar with these switches. (low profile, black, no lights).

This is the keyboard I personally have (I have the white one, but they do it in black too). It's full RGB, and can be customized to one color, with different intensity, so you can easily put it the way you like. I prefer blue switches (Clicky!!), but they do it with brown switches too (no clicky). So far, this has been an excellent keyboard for only $50.

Quick guide on which type of mechanical keys will be clicky, but honestly, you get used to the clickiness of the blue switches super fast (may not apply to co-workers tho).

Yeah, my desk is in the living room so I'm concerned about the SMP factor (Spousal murder potential)

In that case, I would go with either red or brown. Red for linear (more like membrane-dome keyboards) or brown for the mechanical keyboard feel with a bump once you reach the contact point.

Yeah, I was kinda looking at this guy: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RHRDS2K/?tag=thtv02-20

Aside from the "gamer" bend to it, it looks like you can customize the backlighting to suit needs...
