Don't do what I did on accident.

Some years ago they had a fancy consolidation program through the Feds. I decided...hey, let's consolidate because some were, oddly, different interest rates and there were several accounts since I took them out over so many years. Consolidated them all, lowered my payment, all was awesome.

Until I realized that reset them to a 20 year plan again.

Always said I'd pay extra on them to get them paid off faster. Then kiddo needed 9K in braces, or we needed a new car, or...well, the interest rate was a whoppin 3% so it always seemed more prudent to put the money elsewhere. I made some over payments but...eh, not enough to make more than a year or two difference.
