I had to set up our tent, that little boy was clueless,lol. I never considered permission. I was a 38 year old mom and wife in college. I came home and told him I was going out of state to do research at occupy and that was that. We had fun, didn't know it was World Series weekend which made it intersting. Hooters let me use their wifi so I could help people in the camp with social services, the VA, etc.... I felt pretty tough after that weekend was over, it was a crazy time downtown.

I'm pretty sure YOU are allowed to go camping without a man to help you. I think it's just me, the wee female, who needs a protector.

Also, this is what I saw when I was done taking down my tent and helping set up the bike rack...two of the girls were sitting around while the guys (not even their bfs LOL) were taking down the tent that they were supposed to help with

Spoiler: This was my exact nightmare and I practiced in the driveway!

Even when I go with Matt, I still help setup/take down. I was just nervous about doing it 100% on my own I would absolutely die if I just sat there letting guys do everything for me. I feel ready to run into the woods alone for camping now, tho. I already had the hiking and such down pat, now I've got the tent setup thing!
