I know the feeling. Last year was the first year with my dad gone, and it was mostly just survival for my mom and I. Now in year 2, I actually feel more non-festive than I did last year. No tree, no decorations, no holiday cheer. We're going to Vegas for actual Christmas, but my cheer is just non-existant.

 

I feel you, tree is up because...kids. The year dad passed was hard because his funeral was on Xmas eve, But after I had children I felt festive again. but, this year the kids are down. I found a "Polar Express" train ride through IA and MN, I think we might try that. Sorry to hear about your dad. My 12 year old is making stockings for the nursing home, so maybe that will kick her into cheer mode

galena is always a nice little trip.

a bit of a generic recommendation, but the christkindlmarket in chicago is always festive. it's pretty hustle and bustle though, especially this close to christmas, which might not fit a somber-but-want-to-be-festive mood. nothing warms you up quite like glühwein in a cute little boot mug.

 

MN, IA, or IL! Well that's just great! So you're not even considering 'America's Dairyland'! Which I will refer to either that way or as WI from now on out of respect for the terrific Tracy Wethington, since I realized recently that my state's last three letters are a bit unseemly. On a more serious note, I'm sorry to hear about your holiday time sadness. Please try to remember that there's sort of an 'inverse proportion' thing going on here. When you feel badly because of missing loved ones, it just confirms how much positive and happy influence these people had on you! So that's a nice thing to remember, and an incentive to continue this tradition with those close to you! ( :

Yes, probably I'm so sorry. I have extra nerves in my mouth so they can never get me numb. They send me to a surgeon anytime I need anything done so they can put me to sleep. I am still traumatized from when we found all THAT out.
