12/17 - Tinsel Tuesday!

Except when I'm getting deer jerky from @Buntastic I'll gush over that and almost kiss her feet any day for some deer jerky!

 

Tone? Do I look them in the eye? Do I move towards them? Do I open it and then thank them or after I've opened it and seen what it was. If it's a big ticket item do I gasp and say thanks really excitedly? Am I too excited over nothing? Did I say thank you with enough force that they know that I really mean it?
I get told a lot that I come off as very ungrateful for everything and It really hurts because I try my best to say thank you for everything that I get. Then I get told to stop saying thank you for everything. Then I'm told my thank you's come across as hollow because I don't seem genuine enough.
Every social interaction is like playing 4d chess in my head and I'm playing with checkers pieces.

I don't have social anxiety (I just sometimes hate people). I'm not afraid of public speaking. I'm the person at parties you hate because I'll walk up and introduce myself to you and chat away. I talk to people when I'm in line at the grocery store. My kid is constantly saying, "How the hell do you just strike up a conversation with ANYONE?" My bff is constantly amazed at how fast people open up to me and spill their life's story (legit just happened last week with a woman I still don't know the first name of, I now know what happened to her son (bad thing), how she's dealing, super detailed stuff...kid was once again, 'How the hell does that happen mom?")

I don't overthink things.

I also truly don't give a rat's ass what people think of me (most of the time) since my daughter died because...well...I got judged like crazy for things after that by people who were supposed to love me.

it's freeing not caring what people think or worrying (much, I'm not an alien) about what people think of you.

So trust me.

"Thank you!" is all you need to do. Maybe write a thank you note if that is necessary. Smile when you say thank you so your voice sounds like a smile.

Expectations beyond that are not on you. At all. It's that simple.

 

especially when gift giving devolves into everyone passing around the same twenty dollar bill in the form of different gift cards.

the group i used to exchange with used to do a not-secret santa, where you were given one person, and it had to be an inexpensive gift that was either homemade or at least not generic. basically, pick one thoughtful, meaningful gift. it was pretty great... then it turned into a requirement that everyone gives a wishlist of their top 3 desired items, and if you don't say what you want, you'll get a gift card to a big box store. unsurprisingly, the wishlist was usually a gift card anyway... so, literally the exact opposite of the spirit of how it started, just a more convoluted way of who passes a gift card around to which person. it loses all meaning when it's forced like that.

Honestly? I just say thank you, this will be great in my living room, or I can use this in my kitchen, or whatever. Just to let them know I'll use their gift. But otherwise...thanks and that's plenty. I get it though. I worry whether people will like what I get them. I worry about that a lot. I don't want anyone to gush...it's just my own personal reverse anxiety.

If you've smiled, said thank you, meant the thank you, then all the rest is the problem of the people judging you. They have issues they want you to solve and you can't do that.

So yes. Tone.

Smile when you say thank you and your voice will sound like a smile. Look them in the eye. Big ticket item from someone you know well? Maybe a hug.

Thank you when they hand you the gift. Thank you after you open it (saying it twice is fine). Maybe add "I really appreciate your thoughtfulness."

Then let it go. If they pester you and criticize your thank yous smile again and say, "I really do appreciate your gift, thank you again." and walk away.

Remember. Their problem. NOT YOURS.

 

All of this is avoided if you simply don't celebrate any holidays ever.

This is me! This is when I do care! I sent four gifts to people on the forum this year and yep, worried about every single one of them! (See, not a total alien! I have major feels!)

And everyone said thank you and I know they appreciate them and I'm now good. Quelled my anxiety!

 

Opened the oven to move my cookies and from the corner of my eye, I see Scrags take off like a speeding demon from hell...cause he tried to leap directly into the oven to steal a cookie Caught him, he starts kicking and flailing and howling at me, drag him off to the bathroom to take a little breather...realize I knocked over a pastry bag of cookie dough over and it's now been stolen by my dogs. Get a cat, they said! So low maintenance! Get a dog, they said! man's best friend! More like cookie thieves!
