your gifts to me started an "unopened gifts" pile for me which honestly, i haven't had for years, and i can't tell you (and everyone) how much that means to me to even be thought of, let alone have spent money on me i don't deserve itttttt

 

Exactly!! Somehow I pull it off, because (not to toot my own horn, this sounds so cocky but I swear I don't mean it that way) people at church love me and want to spend time with me, while all the time I'm dying inside and not wanting to do anything with anyone or go anywhere. It makes me feel bad.

For those gifts given as a dominance display, absent reciprocity, there is somehow an unsettling element of control or untoward influence which is more difficult to explicitly address; the use of kindness as a tool for increasing social status is both obviously in the category of making virtue from vice, while simultaneously inextricably linked to the natural and necessary hierarchical structure of human society. When a seemingly inescapable feature of nature is also evidently unvirtuous, it's difficult to know specifically how to incorporate into a rational moral structure. I suppose there's probably arguments from Zen that could be used to assault the problem, but that's more than a little out of my depth.
