Most people don't understand the true horror of being a Leaf fan. They can't just go be embarrassing and awful, they have to give you hope first.

Like everyone remembers the game 7 collapse against Boston. People might not remember that the Leafs were major underdogs in that series, with many people predicting a Boston sweep. No one expected them to win that game 6, and even getting to game 7 felt like an accomplishment. No one had any expectations to win that game until it was 4-1. I remember watching it get to 3-1 and still thinking they would lose, but nope, they had to get that 4th goal to give hope before the collapse.

So let's take this to the current situation, at least from a personal standpoint. I went to Pittsburgh to watch them play last Tuesday and they laid a complete egg. The kind of game that makes you think they are done, and have no chance this season. But of course the game I didn't go to two nights later in Toronto was their best game of the season. They had passion, they cared, they shut the Pens out. Going into Saturday, there was buzz that they finally found their game, the talent and the effort level finally clicked. This was a chance to prove it. That's the macro hope, but that's not enough. It would have been one thing to have the zamboni driver come in, and then they get crushed anyways, but they just had to go score those 2 quick goals, they had to give that sprinkle of hope. Only once they made us believe they were going to destroy the zamboni driver could they then crush their fans.
