How 'bout those Reds?
I'm thinking about this because yesterday there was that 'hard' vs 'soft' (Oh hush!) science HIT.
It came up immediately after I'd just had a spontaneous conversation with a friend of mine about how it had popped
into my mind that a traditional catcher's mitt for a 'hardball' (baseball) wouldn't work for the game of softball.
They're just so perfectly 'molded' for the size of a baseball.
I looked it up, and son of a gun if there isn't a specialized softball glove for catchers!
It sort of resembles a first baseman's glove with a little extra padding around the edge.
Well, I'd better go. (Oh, please! Stop your affectionate booing! Okay, one more little story!)
My dad was a big fan of Johnny Bench. It took me years to really understand that. But playing catcher is kind
of like being a hockey goalie. (Which one of you nuts recently admitted to playing that position?) You've got to be
a little out of your mind, but in an admirable way. Dad told me a story about how Bench had repeatedly signaled
his pitcher to throw the ball harder. After several failed attempts at communicating this to his satisfaction, Bench,
still in his squatting position, threw the ball back so hard that the pitcher halfway fell over backwards.
