05/23 - Sunflower Saturday

I LOVED those. Those and boom lifts. I started a job as a pleb at a nuke plant during a refueling outage and volunteered to get every single qual they'd let me take. I got qual'd on 40' scissor lifts and 80' JLG's. Guess who got to stay as a qualified employee during the start-up layoffs because there wasn't anyone else on the project qual'd to operate the lifts for the outside contractors?

I was technically qual'd to, if necessary, breach a reactor's containment building while using dosimetry with a JLG lift to fight a fire. NRC quals kick ass.

I loved that job. Easiest money ever. We had a week of constant storms, 24/7. We got paid 72 hours to sit in the trailer and literally do nothing. If we went anywhere besides the porch to smoke or the portapotty, Security was on the phone asking why the hell there were workers in the field during lighting.

When I worked an actual outage, getting to do fire-watch or FME monitor in containment was awesome. You have one, single, job. No broom-pushing, no make-work to look busy. You watch for a fire, and that's it. FME, you log every. single. thing. that comes into that zone. Down to the pennies in someone's pocket, every single dollar bill or card in their wallet, every single socket or wrench or tool they bring into the FME zone. Easy money.

 

Close your windows. Get your earplugs. They won't save you, but if it helps you to think they will, you can try.
