All good. Understand. Rationale beings. I'm happy with the response rate thus far, but I'm trying to understand if there are ways to optimize. For what it's worth, I don't have negative reviews (yet) on the survey/profile it seems. Maybe once you all find it.

That's not how it works. You have to actually do the survey to be able to leave a review. Because you're being coy, no one here knows what survey you're talking about, so the best feedback you're going to get is "if you pay more, you get better respondents."

requesters get a reputation really quick on mechanical Turk. If you keep offering easy to do studies that pay well, I'm sure that after a few studies it'll be easier to get responses

I'm not sure I should be impressed or disappointed that you managed to mention the word "fire" without lighting a match.

Some of the things that generally will make a survey be rated positively:
    • Higher pay
    • Shorter completion times
    • If a survey requires a demographic or other screen, put these as early in the survey as possible
    • If the survey uses a screener, pay for the screener if possible (even a nickle or a penny, with the rest as bonus compensation after completion of the HIT)
    • Provide longer timers, especially for surveys that are clearly not time sensitive, giving respondents additional flexibility after accepting your task
    • Bonuses, especially performance based or user choice bonuses ("respondents who answer all attention check questions correctly will receive an extra 25¢ as thanks for their hard work, etc.")
    • Incorporating game elements, especially games that give respondents some bonus incentive

Some of the things that generally will result in complaints about a survey or workers returning the HIT:
    • The use of sliders, especially for questions that could plausibly only have binary responses
    • Written responses, especially those with arbitrary character limits, and super duper especially those obviously only intended to serve as a study manipulation (Write about a time you were VERY ANGRY because your mom gave you a swirly) followed by a battery of likert questions about moms &|| toilets
    • Short HIT timers relative to total length of the HIT content
    • Unfairly compensated, &|| non-optional bonus "games" (complete these 500 anagrams for your chance to get 10 tokens to enter my raffle to earn an extra nickle, payable within the next three months!)
    • Extremely obvious manipulations, especially if the survey is related to some political or other sensitive content ("haha, my survey proved that white women 22-37 from Texas are 22% more likely to support putting babies on spikes because...")
    • Broken or missing completion codes
    • Long stretches of likert bubble fields. Nobody likes getting trapped in the bubble zone
    • Radio button attention checks that say "leave this response blank"
    • General layout problems, i.e. a likert bubble wall window-paned in a frame that requires a horizontal scroll bar, pages that inadvertently repeat or link back on themselves, broken buttons
    • Unnecessarily long or per element timers that prevent respondents from advancing
    • Rejections, especially for missing a single attention check item (dropping the respondent is always preferable to letting them submit for a guaranteed rejection)
    • Asking how many minutes it would take to fill a 27 cubic foot hole, dug by Emily's father the marathon runner, with pictures of sheep eating a moldy loaf of bread, using 10 printers, if the printers are maintained by the town choir's male singers who just came back from the forest with a basket of three different kinds of mushrooms

For genuinely restricted budgets, posting outside of the busiest turking hours is a strategy worth considering. You'll get a narrower cross section of respondents, but a survey with low/mediocre pay is much more palatable at 12 AM when there's nothing else to work on, than 12 PM when working on the HIT may result in missing other, more fairly compensated work.

All of this detail is appreciated, and much of it has been incorporated. If only increasing the wage didn't require another dance with IRB..
