Our local university is starting next week I think. I'd say that other colleges are going to start in some capacity within the next few weeks.

Yeah at this point it is completely state + locality dependent. A lot of places are going for their traditional start date but many others are pushing too.

Also note: I'm not a parent myself but have teachers in the fam

So looking for a new headset

    I have these right now:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HJDZRJP/?tag=thtv02-20

Not a fancy headset but I def need a new one. I even replaced the plug cable last month and the overall sound is good but it never actually reaches a high volume. And I ordered them in late 2018 so it's time for some new gear anyways. Any reasonable advice maybe @Masterbah or @Pronewbi3 if no one else. Willing to spend a bit (~80-100) but would prefer a really good cheaper option

Scorching Sunday is right...Driving to MA from FL and my alternator belt in my car snapped on the highway because the mechanic who replaced the AC didn't replace the compressor and it burned right into the belt :emoji_grinning:

Got towed to a PepBoys (after a 3 hour wait for the truck), waited for PepBoys to open (4 more hours), got an Uber to the only rental car place open today (thank God for Enterprise), rented a car, now for a 16+ hour drive home! At least there's working AC in this car. When I left PepBoys the quote was at $1,700 and they weren't even done. Time to go qual hunting when I get home I guess lmao

Alright, I'm gonna break the politics & economics rule all in one post.. @ThisPoorGuy forgive me for my sins lol.

Obviously I'm never into fear mongering over "wahhh mtruck is dying" but I would be at least a little cautious with expectations for fall semester work availability from academia.

Now I definitely don't have a ton of insight into federal funding changes (proposed NSF funding is down bigly, NIH funding is up - but most of those #s were from before coronavirus nuked the world). However, I have seen a good bit of discussion going on about the academic job market and kind of the "on the ground" sentiment, how schools are handling the actual university portion, etc etc. None of it really looks fantastic but - again I cannot stress this enough - I have absolutely zero insight into how it impacts the economics of research.

I'd say my view here is a bit like sitting around and occasionally reading the daily thread to get a feel for MTurk. A lot of my processing lacks context, and so some of my thoughts will be blatantly stupid and incorrect. Even the NSF's proposed budget cuts might not be bad for us. 7% decrease, however they intend to double investment in AI research, which favors platforms like MTurk at least for some of the "grunt" work and it is where AMT has actually made the largest improvements (SM integration, etc). So I mean a funding budget decrease might make things tight, but that might even favor MTurk anyway given it's "cheaper" than many alternatives. So who knows. Obviously originally COVID caused an increase in work availability as a lot of researchers were forced to move their stuff online but at least some of them will get their human lab rats back and I also don't know how many of them will actually be "back" themselves.

All that said, this was the graph I saw fly by at some point this week that made me kinda double take and start giving it all a second thought lol, And it was echo'd in at least 1 or 2 other fields mostly with the discussion being tied back to the 2008 economy explosion. Also before I copy/paste the image lemme not bury the lede here and say from what I saw the expectation is about 2/3rds worth of jobs would be posted AFTER this dataset was collected so it naturally SHOULDN'T be as bad as it looks, but even tossing back to the 2008 portion of it and the overall situation of the world I would at least plan for some reduction in total cap vs last year.

I think - and definitely hope - that a lot of what we do is kind of insulated from the major effects of everything going on out in the "real" world, and we probably get some padding safety protection from the fact anything that prevents in person interaction favors our work environment, but I would at least say to plan to be a bit flexible in the coming weeks/months. I certainly don't know how any on-campus interruptions would affect research (@emamaya @Masterbah @Calyrica maybe have insight here?) but I figure we can't escape all the negatives of everything going wrong.

So again, not sharing to induce fear/panic, but it's information I've been trying to put together & simmer on and I think its generally better to share than to just sit on it. I'm almost always optimistic about MTurk's ecosystem, and realistically that isn't dampened too much atm, just using the above to sort of ground expectations a little. Maybe smarter folks here have better insight/interpretations.. that happens like 9 out of 10 times anyway haha.

++ as always on MTurk, people who put in work will earn money, lol.
