08/16 - Scorching Sunday!

Unfortunately, I don't have much to contribute here. Not only am I not in the same country where most work comes from, but also I'm in the type of science that needs people in the lab doing experiments, so my field would never even get close to thinking about maybe needing mturk.

But from my observation, most research labs in Unis in Canada have picked up again with in person work. You just have to wear a mask if you're within 6ft of someone else and it's all good and dandy. However, this is considering that Covid, while not over over here, is really not as bad. For example, in Quebec, we have less than 100 new daily cases and over 10k tests/day, so that probably plays a huge role in our economy (and unis) being pretty open.
For social research (most surveys), I expect to see a little less than before, as most of it was probably done through online platforms prior to the pandemic anyway. Funding will have the biggest factor here.
For research in the AI field, I expect funding to be similar to the before times, as it's a field that would probably be positively impacted by the pandemic (so less overall money available through funding, but more funneled into AI). The problem I could see is that those who used to do the research had other things to do, so they left the data collection to us. Now, with nothing "better" to do, they might be more incline to do it themselves, so we could see a decrease here.

tl;dr: I have no idea what will happen because it's not my field, I haven't been here long, and I'm in a country where the pandemic is properly managed, so most in person activities have restarted, so it's even harder to know what to expect coming from the US, but I expect (guess pulled out of my ass) that work will be a bit slower.

Well I'll ad my 2 cents as a primary survey taker and batch work for a couple specific uni labs.

I'm not scared. It was obvious once shizzle hit the fan it would be bad, but surprisingly despite my lack of actual work I have had plenty of academia coming through my queue I've noticed. Although I can't really make too big of a judgement because these are always my worst and laziest times through the years.

August/September are my best months by a mile for the last few years. Only concern I really have is places forcing back people in person and suddenly their study/lab/project that used mturk is on hold permanently.

One of the other charts posted w/ it was a graph of adjunct positions, which absolutely skyrocketed almost in lockstep with the plummeting portion of that graph. I think that was their main concern/complaint from their POV, was that previous TT positions were being shit on and being turned into an academic gig economy.. which might be the most ironic thing ever

My best guess was it was just a holdover measure, it makes sense if you don't know the future to not begin committing to it. But much of that completely escapes my understanding since I know next to nothing about academia.

Well, I could try to take the moral high ground, Quebec has more than half the deaths of all Canada (while having ~25% of the population) because the virus got into our old-folks home and made some damage...

I noticed my typo and fixed it, I meant (like you) that AI would be positively affected.

Did some more fun stats. Our residential and long-term care facilities (CHSLDs) account for 68.55% of Covid deaths in QUebec and 43.45% of Covid deaths in Canada, so that's not great!
