I got a Hyundai Elantra sel. I know it's not the best car in the world, but I got a newer model with low mileage and a ton of features for a pretty good price.

Breaking the ban because this is important: I got my truck for $1800 (saved from MTurk work) and immediately went to a shop to get the state inspection done on on it. Ol' boy at the shop goes "You just bought Cash's truck. I know this truck. Good truck." and instead of doing the full inspection just did the lights/wipers part of the inspection.

Next morning I got up and pulled a wheel to do my own inspection. The pads were the wrong size and overlapped the rotors, which were worn almost to the cooling fins. The pads were worn about 90% of the way except where they hung over the rotors. The spark plugs were iridium plugs and looked like they were the ones installed at the factory, and the plug wires were brown ACDelco's. They WERE factory, from 2002.

Extra $300 and I replaced the front and rear brakes, all the fluids, and the seeping water pump (which was indicative of the seal about to go bad and could cause the pump to seize and ruin the serpentine belt), all the plugs and wires where now I only spend about $30 in gas going back and forth 75 miles (plus the 3 miles each way from the hotel to the hospital).

Ol' girl has gotten me back and forth to my proton therapy without fail the last 6 weeks because I looked the gift horse in the mouth and didn't trust the inspecting mechanic.

Take yours in and have them look for all the small stuff that might be *starting* to go wrong. It'll save you in the long run if you don't have the know-how or tools to diagnose and fix it yourself. If my brakes or water pump had gone out halfway to an appt., the towing fee alone would have cost more than the repairs/maintenance would have been.
