    well, when it pays out on mturk is technically when you received it. it just sits in your amazon worker account until it gets sent to the bank, which is bare miminum 3 days. so if you got approved on 12/31 and it didn't get sent to your bank til 1/2, you might have discrepancies. I've used the dashboard numbers for years and have never had any issues or been audited.

    yeah so a lot people make a lot of mistakes around tax time. I've never hit the $20k mark to get a 1099, but I hit $13k pretty standardly every year. and I just use the number from the dashboard when doing taxes. I am no tax expert, just experienced in 4 years of this and have not been audited ever. so take everything you read on the internet with a grain of salt and maybe seek out a CPA if you can... otherwise glhf.

    Being audited shouldn't even be a worry, it just means they're looking to verify anything possibly goofy or your ball got picked in the lottery. Worst case scenario if you're not evading taxes is they'll ask for verification on something or you'll have to take a picture of your home office or you'll have to eat boogers on live tv.

    I'm dealing with a tax issue right now stemming from my first year reporting taxes from MTurk. However, it wasn't the first year that I did MTurk work, and the IRS has no information about me making any money that year. I told the IRS person I was working with, and their response was "You should report what you made, but since we didn't receive any payment information from Amazon we don't know how much you actually made." Unless you are living a luxurious lifestyle on your zero reported wages, I'm not sure the IRS would even know to take a look at you.

    That being said. Report your taxes, fully and correctly, it keeps you out of trouble and helps you down the long run as this money still counts towards things like Social Security points we will all need once we get to that ripe old age of retirement.

    agreed, and if this is your first year turking and filing with mturk as income, maybe talk to an accountant or have someone else prepare your shit this year so you know what to do/expect. everyone's situation is different and needs different things.

    What's really dumb is that during your tax filing is the worst time to first start thinking about your MTurk work. Assuming its a sizable amount of your income. Being told after doing the paperwork, "oh yeah, you owe $XXX which you should have been paying through the year" is shocking especially since there is basically no heads up from Amazon when you start. Like their should be an onboarding PowerPoint they send you once you've cleared the 100 initial tasks or something.
