Self checkout to me takes away a persons job because the customer does the job, I don't work for free or in my shopping time, that's my view.

 

Think about the self-driving cars as a specific example. If there are 100s or 1000s of vehicles using the same network at the same time, and any lag could result in fatal accidents, they need to reduce the possibility of lag/latency as much as possible. That's a whole lot of data.

 

Mturk giving me a PRE error page despite turning off all scrapers for the meantime because their website is exploding is actually comical.

This is false logic. Those people's jobs are going away anyway. Not using it is not going to support or oppose that. As a matter of fact I am thankful for self checkouts. Walmart only runs 2-3 cashiers anyway and at least I can get in and out and give those people less stress.

 

Our grocery stores typically have 2 attendants running self-checkout, they aren't entirely unsupervised.
They're put in place typically for people who are getting a handful of items. Why would I want to sit behind people with $200 in their cart when I'm buying a drink, some chips and a sandwich from the deli for lunch.

 

I bet when Bezos goes into space all of mturk will be shutdown and every hit will be a 0 paying video of him in the shuttle.

 

Sadly, corporations went the opposite route. "Sure, you can have a worker ring this up for you. We pick the most anti-social, physical slow, overtalking people we can find. Then we make it so there's only ever one available, this way there's always a 30 minute long wait."

 

You too get to play the fun game of "spot the brands you've heard of before". The last time I was in Aldi, I broke my record with 7.

 

They do that on purpose to get you to use self checkout...

 

I have to pee and get lunch, I disavow all conversation that happens for the next 30min and will clean it up when I get back.

Depending on the staffing and the amount of cameras, there could be discounts built in. It's called theft. The stores have run the numbers and decided they will still save money by not paying people to run checkout. People will take items without scanning. People will put in different items that are cheaper by weight than what they actually buy.

Literally they choose to lose money to theft rather than pay people to work the stores.
