Oh good since I was just bashing one academic I'll say in many cases (probably overwhelmingly most cases) the garbage estimates aren't in malice.

1. IRBs (et al) often are the ones who determine what the requester has to suggest as a completion time
   1. This can be as insane as a base # of mins per page (even if their design is just 1 bubble Q / pg) to also silly formulas based on spaghettis noodles and neanderthal horoscopes
2. Requester has no clue most of his p's are going to be "pro" survey takers and that's how long it took them/their ta/their spouse who 1) doesn't do it a lot and 2) isn't financially incentivized to care about speed and 3) probably doesn't care to do it at all and may just make something up
3. It is way better to overestimate and get people happy it didn't take as long as expected than the opposite because if you fuck up and say it's 2min and it's actually 10 the deluge of angry emails is H O R R I F I C
4. As many requesters are confused if that estimate is the amount of time the HIT is in your queue for as are confused and have no clue that there even is a queue and throw their completion time estimate as the actual HIT duration
5. etc, etc, etc, to infinity and hoods that likely have friendly/silly reasons for the bad guesses

My favorite thing to do today is long winded posts without an actual point..

point being, they deserve an accurate review for the time it took, because the other thing is (..relatively, plenty of args for it being impactful) meaningless & requires godlike mind reading so not worth putting into the equation

Live and let live, unless there's a reCAPTCHA then everyone needs to be fired.

 

My main point is the "pro turkers" often speed through these hits pretty quick and if we're being honest, aren't really fully reading everything or taking it seriously. The review times are not really an accurate representation of how long it would genuinely take to do what the req wants is what I'm saying

This leads to the req thinking they are paying a great wage, when in fact, the reason I don't take your study seriously and speed through it is bc your rate is garbage.

Then the reqs also reduce pay rates when they see workers rating it at $45+/hr....

I can't speak for everyone, but I can agree with you many people really don't care in general but I know for a fact there are plenty who skim through the consent pages just like me.

But here is my personal example of why I don't think like this:
$4.04/hr 10:24 $0.70
$19.38/hr 2:10 $0.70

At the end of the day, I just appreciate any extra dollar in my pocket, we live in a shitty world with few good people.

There isn't really an easy or correct answer to the issue I'm pondering in that post..

The rating system works for turkers so we know what hits can be done quickly for how much, if we know how to do them... but the reqs are also paying attention and the system can potentially work against us in different ways as well

I've just been thinking what the best approach on my individual level is, as far as maintaining my access to hits and contribution to the community as well

 

Right. There are always going to be people who are really slow and people who are really fast. I don't want fast people like me to ruin it for newbies or slower people. I'm a fast reader and typer and I know it. I can read a 300+ page novel in about two hours or so (avg is five hours, according to Google) and type above 100wpm, so of course I'm going to finish a survey faster than most people. I don't want anyone to be penalized for it, though. We all deserve a good turking wage.

Y'all be talking about ratings and stuff, and I just got here after uninstalling and reinstalling darn near everything on my POS computer. No money earned today and trying to get in back into the mood to earn it. At least my computer running much faster now. Lordy it would help if I actually knew what I was doing in all this instead of having to search the web on why my computer was running slow. I ENVY YOU FOLKS WHO ARE COMPUTER GURUS!!
