Yeah just ignore /r/mturk outside of meta talk. They are downers that are stuck in the phase of not really understanding how to make money on this platform.

Meanwhile people on the forums make leaps and bounds more money because of shared knowledge. For example a lot of people on here have a weekly goal of around $300 (that is mine as well although I often double it)

Oh and pro tip a for any time that you are trying to break into a community that you lucked out in doing is to go when stuff is slow like a weekend. People are far more willing to show you the ropes of a community if they aren't busy.

My thing is that I'm basically always at my computer or at least at my apartment but I don't actually spend that many hours actively working each day. The biggest turning point for me in turking is when I was able to get most of my searching to be basically passively done.

To do this passive searching I get TTS (Text to Speech) alerts from my include list on Overwatch (you can use Hit Finder to the the same thing) and it says the names of the requester when they pop up.

Now I have two options of how to get alerted of stuff going up when I'm away from my computer but still within sprinting distance of my computer and that is Push Bullet and SoundWire. Push bullet only really works with hit finder and I like TTS alerts so I opted to go with SoundWire.

Now SoundWire is basically just a way for me to push my computer audio to my phone while I am away from the computer. (cooking w/e) but it works wonderfully for me.

I'm just trying to gain as much knowledge as I can , learning = earning. I will probably be around snooping to ask questions for awhile. I don't have anything better to do than sit at my computer, so might as well try to maximize my time here. ;p Is there any reason you don't just use what MTS includes instead of Overwatch, since it has all this stuff packed into one?

I also actually go to sleep with soundwire on my phone while wearing earbuds to get TTS alerts for anything that is :flame:enough to wake up for... but you obviously don't need to go that far lol.

For my phone alarm I use Sleep as Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid.sleep&hl=en because it allows me to push my phone alarm through the earbuds unlike stock android alarms. I even actually have it set to force to ONLY go through my earbuds so that if I unplug my earbuds on a day that I wake up early that the alarm won't start blasting through the speakers.

Overwatch is a whole other thing. It's probably the most useful tool I've found because it alerts you when batches/saved requesters post so you can jump on it quick.

Speaking of: how do you wake up for batches and such? Do you just jump out of bed and are already alert? Or do you end up staying up? I feel like I couldn't rouse myself out of a good sleep and be alert quickly enough to grab stuff.

http://mturksuite.com/ is basically collection of scripts packaged together in a clean extension by @Kadauchi and it includes

    • Hit Finder (To find hits)
    • Hit Catcher (To Catch hits)
    • And various other small stuff

Overwatch on the other hand is a script that will only search for requesters or strings that you put into it. It actually was the inspiration for hit finder to have TTS alerts after a few of us realized how game changing having them was.

You can find overwatch's thread here for more info: https://turkerhub.com/threads/worker-mturk-overwatch-script.19/

But if you have any questions you can just ask anyways.

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, I'd be hella grateful if you could like PM me at some point and hit me with like a "things I wish I knew" or something. I'm down to tryhard and all that jazz. No trouble if not, I'll keep snooping until I can turk properly.

If I hear a name that I know will give me a $20/hr or so I get up fairly quickly if it wakes me up at all... Honestly it mostly is for the first 30min before I wake up and that hour or so before I get up when I am actually sort of awake to get a quick to wake up.

Well I use both hit finder and overwatch but TECHNICALLY you can do overwatch's stuff in hit finder and save some page refreshes. I just really like overwatch and find it helps me to see just my include list stuff.

You are free to PM me with questions (and you wouldn't be the only person to), but honestly in general I try o suggest people to ask in the daily thread or whatever for help instead of PMs so that you have a larger pool of people helping you instead of just a single person.

While I have actually gotten the hang of turking (as is evident by my weekly earnings) I actually have only been turking for about a year now so even I am learning stuff still.

Oh one thing I can suggest though is that if you are only using a single monitor on your computer you should really think about getting a second one. I personally have 3 monitors with one of them being a vertical monitor and it is awesome.

Oh. I was almost at $150 for my second week, had trouble getting that high this week, but that was mostly due to me being lazy :p
