Why is the home office one such a big problem?

 

Ths IRS scares me, so I'm always open about every penny I make

 

It's a tough one to honestly claim and a lot of people take it when they really shouldn’t be. The “home office” (can be a whole room, a portion of a room, etc.) needs to be used exclusively for the business, so in the case of something like mTurk you would be claiming that you use that space for nothing other than your Turking work. For many people (and I’d argue most), that isn’t the case. The same issue comes up with deducting the cost of computers, computer supplies, etc.

Good! Today is dead, I would be happy to get the $6.90 : ) I was honestly starting to wonder if somehow the bots got in and took my place. It was supposed to start at 813 AM and I was in the middle of finishing up a hit so I left it and did not click join conversation until 811AM. Then it just never started.

 

you can deduct partial use of electronics like computers. like 90% turking, 10% randomness.

 

That is true. You just would want to be very careful about claiming 100% of something like a computer. It definitely raises red flags with the IRS and really isn't an accurate portrayal of usage for most people, especially so for gig workers.
