Stupid coworker coming by to ask a question caused me to miss this

 

I am just concerned about time to build it with my 2 kids at home. I do have one that my brother built before he passed away. I haven't even hooked it up since he passed away 2 years ago....I should probably set it up and see what it has...he was really into building

Most cheap laptops I have seen only can output to 1 or 2 displays and they will run into performance issues far sooner then a desktop. Also if for some reason you ever want to transform a cheap desktop into a gaming PC you can easily do that by just adding a graphics card into it instead of buying an all new laptop.

If it was built shortly before he passed it likely was more then enough for anything that you need. As long as you don't feel weird about using it that will prob be a good way to go about it as it will be a free option that may be better then the cheap options you have. If you can tell me what is in the computer or send pictures I can likely tell you what you are working with. (For example my computer that I built ~6? years ago that I am still using is still far overkill for mturk and even when it had the old gpu in it the thing played games decently still although the rx480 that I picked up for $170 is better obviously)

I don't know if the hitdb part of MTS is fully featured yet @Kadauchi would know obviously..

I will get some information on it this weekend. I am imagining it is probably pretty decent. He called it the "vault" and used it for movies and stuff. I just feel weird about opening it up, worried about what might be on it I guess. HE took his own life and I just don't want to find anything but I guess its time to do something with it and it might as well be something that will help my kids like the extra money turking does.

If he used it for storage for movies and playing movies and stuff my guess would be that it probably has pretty good memory and video card at least. I will set it up this weekend and see what I can find out.

I love logging in and seeing the nerd discussions. It's making figuring out how to build my husband's next computer so much easier. Now to Turk and earn the moola for it, since it's going to be a pretty penny.

a) it doesn't take as long as they say, but yes it's still super underpaid
b) it is mathematically impossible to achieve the bonus given the length of time they DO take

 

If you really don't want to go digging through stuff you could always do a clean install of windows so that you never find out stuff that he could have had on it though..

I'll be honest.. I plan on having my computer always encrypted so my kids or whatever will never find out what ever dark secret I have

Another option that would cost money is to clone all of his HDDs over to something else so that if you ever want to dig through it you can but you won't need to do it now.

I fixed it a few days ago but yeah.

 

Ugh been there, I'm sorry to hear it. I would suggest wiping the drive and installing a fresh OS on it before you get into it. You never know what you might find and that is not something you likely want to deal with.
