You can also do both if you run the forum in two windows. I've done that before. Had one forum window in work mode on one monitor and other stuff I was doing on the main monitor. A second social forum window in the background. It let me do my other stuff while not missing good work hits, at the same time it kept my place and let me catch up on the social side when I could. If you refresh either of the pages though it will default to the last setting.
