You guys are a bunch of knuckleheads sometimes.

 

I've been working primarily or solely online since the early 2010s (not doing mTurk), but my experience is unfortunately mostly in services, marketing, and digital products.

I can't help you too much with the logistics of shipping and scaling a business based on phsyical goods like that if you should turn out to be more successful than you imagine, but I can help with some of the Internet-specific stuff.

 

If you are doing local stuff, try to see what's all ready out there. If you are online only you really have to do something new or unique. Also Pintrest is in my opinion the best advertisement there is for this sort of stuff. If you can take good pictures and get them to spread on social media it's tons of free advertisement. Again though, it's gotta be something unique. If you have a friend that's good with photography or have a nice camera and know what you're doing you'll do so much better in my experience. People that post crappy cellphone pics on their facebook and then expect their friends to share them don't usually work out.

Yeah, I think you would need some samples at least to take pictures of and show where it could be personalized etc. I think that you'll need a portfolio with samples to get started. Have you taken pictures of some of the items you've made already for family/friends? If not and they are still around, maybe they will let you take pictures.

I do have tons of pictures from what I've done. Thankfully a bunch of them were for my sister-in-law's kids and she's a professional photographer lol. So I have her photos and her blessing to post them online. I guess I don't have much experience in ordering a customized product through etsy, I've bought plenty of things there, but they were already made and I didn't change anything. I suppose I should peruse some stores on there and see how other people do it.
