The rental I have him in has a furnace from the 1940's. He was trying to relight it himself with a lit paper towel and cranking the gas up. It flared up on him because of that and he lost some eyebrow hair and stuff. I have it specifically written in my lease that the only repairs a tenant is allowed to make themselves are to change lightbulbs, more or less, because it's an old home and I don't want the liability. I have insurance on every inch of the house from the furnace to the gas lines to the water pipes, to specifically prevent situations like this! Which is why I have it written to ALWAYS call me first and I will be out within 24 hours to fix it myself.

 

Ok, well that's just level 20 stupid on his part then LOL. Someone give your resident a darwin award right there.

I'm an angel of a landlord. My tenant lives there at cost, and I painted every inch of the house and installed new blinds and stuff, left behind a lot of essentials to start him up. I just wanted someone to cover the costs of the property taxes and stuff because I'm not ready to sell until next year. I don't make a dime off my tenant. He is the nicest guy ever and more or less family (I've never met him prior to his tenancy, but one of those "might as well be family" type situations) and I was helping him get out of his divorce situation because he had a pit bull and no where else to turn. You can't rent in our area with a pitty and I knew he'd take care of the house for me which was worth not making a little extra money off it.

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I just learned how to light the pilot light. It kept going out on the water heater. I was trying to light it all day the other day. It wouldn't stay lit and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out condensation was leaking in it and putting it out. We found that out when my husband tried to light it and water hit it at the same time. Almost blew up the damn house! Last time I'm messing with that shit lol

I grew up with gas and oil heaters, I've been fussing with those things since I was a kid and my dad would send me into the basement to light the pilot light.

It was a creepy fucking basement when I was a kid too.
