It wasn't balanced that well as an actual game (expensive late-game creatures basically made every other creature irrelevant), which is probably the biggest reason it was kinda more of a cult classic than a mainstream hit.

But the community made the Tellurian Mod to add a few new creatures and fix balance issues, so it's actually fun to play now instead of just fun to make the creatures. It's really hard to balance things so they're not OP when you're talking about blending mixes and matches of various parts from like 50+ different animals.
