    Well you were missing the sub query in the from (the aliasing is the important bit...otherwise it doesn't work :( ) I mean, unless you were just being approximate with your SQL-ing ;). Had to make a table and some fake data to make sure it worked ;) Also performance wise as long as you're not running two separate queries one after the other, the DB engine should be able to optimize it's search so as to not have too much of an impact on performance.
