As someone that has only been doing this for ~3 days I feel like I shouldn't give any advice.

The only thing I can say is that crypto feels like an extreme form of mturk as far as the community goes. Trust nobody but accept all sources of information. Oh and only 'invest' what you can afford to lose ofc.

As far as actually just buying it however most people buy ETH on coinbase and then transfer to GDAX (owned by coinbase) to save on fees and finally transfer to an actual exchange like Binance.

No there isn't really a catch on coinbase. The company sucks but you can buy whatever amount of coins that you want. Currently I suggest ETH for fee reasons.

Transfer that to GDAX and then to Binance or w/e exchange that you want to trade on.
