    Realistically though, let's break down the calorie needs of a teen boy:

    - A sedentary man's suggested calorie intake is ~2500. We'll be using this as our base minimum kcal requirement.
    - Teen boys are rapidly developing bone and muscle mass. This requires extra calories. Add an extra ~800 calories just for this, plus/minus a bit depending on genetics.
    - Younger teen boys generally don't drive, and walk everywhere. Adults generally have forgotten how many extra calories it takes to walk everywhere. If your kid actually goes places and does things instead of sitting around all day, add 500-1000 calories for this.
    - Many teen boys play sports, whether formally or by rough-housing with their friends, playing hacky-sack, getting frisky with the ladies, etc. Add 500-2000 calories for this.
    - If your teen boy plays football and has been prescribed weightlifting, add another 500-1000 calories to the minimum requirement.

    If you add this all up, a 6,300 kcal minimum average per day is a perfectly reasonable maximum for a very active teen boy.

    I've been poking in some other forums to see if I can get the SUPER SECRET BATCH and it's always funny to see people giving up on the whole day when they can't make their daily by 11

    my youngest walks all over the place including to scouts which its self can be physical depending on what they are doing, plays hockey and football(does weights for football) and works in a reastuarant where he is on his feet all evening. However since he started working/eating at the reastaurant he is not eating at home as much and I have noticed a diffrence in my grocery bill

    As far as weight gain is concerned, it really doesn't matter all that much.

    It's great to have good stuff rather than crap, but a teen that needs 6000 calories and only gets 5000 will stay skinny. That was my junior high / high school experience. I was ridiculously active and even with consistently-tracked intake of controlled portions, only gained a little bit. It took becoming more sedentary as an adult to actually put on any mass.

    Gotta make those protein shakes and eat more protein. Too many carbs teens burn that shit quick.. Increase healthy fats.

    Oh, I loved working at Carl's Jr in high school.

    Half-price everything, and that was back when they still had the Big Burger for $1, which used the same 1/4lb patty that all of the burgers except the $6 burgers used. I'd get a solid 500 calorie burger w/ 25g protein for 50 cents. It was amazing. Helped my lifts and overall energy level a ton.

    I got plenty of protein working at CJ's. But protein won't help all that much with weight gain. It's slow and difficult for the body to process, and your body burns around 1/3 of their calorie value simply going through the work to fully assimilate it.

    Just gotta slow down the calorie burning process. Getting a teen into weight training helps a lot too. As muscle is heavier than fat so consuming more protein, and lifting weights, will bulk you up the healthy route.

    Eating too much protein just tires you out.
    It's difficult to digest, and that digestion exhaustion impacts your ability to hit the weights intensely.
    I'm not a fan of the excessive protein fads.
    A lot of protein-consumption advice comes from bodybuilders in weight training magazines who are using gear and have a chemically-altered capacity to assimilate amino acids.

    For someone who is natural and lifting heavy and frequently, I say increase carbs by a lot, fats by a bit, and eat just enough protein. Getting plenty of rest and avoiding over-training is crucial. For a natty who trains intensely, over-training is really, really easy to dip into.
