The month being less than the week makes me laugh.

 

I was raised with this extremist view that we're all humans and that's all that should ever matter. My dad always told me about how he was the only kid to befriend a black kid in his school (in the 50s), and he took me to Chicago's pride parade when I was 5 just because it was a fun cultural thing. One of his best friends was Muslim and faced tons of shit after 9/11 but he stood up for him every chance he got.

It never so much as occurred to me as a kid (and obviously as an adult) that anything different was anything bad. I don't care what gender creams your twinkie or if you worship belly button lint as a deity. I don't care about that stuff as much as I don't care about the fact that you might like purple and I like blue better. Or you had salmon for dinner and I had chicken. Like, it literally doesn't mean a thing to me besides just being a personal attribute/preference. I wouldn't even say it's being race/culture/religion/sexuality "blind" or even overly-PC or hippie-BS or anything, just an overall "you do you and I'll do me and we'll be cool because we're all humans and in this together" mindset. I like to think our generation (and/or after) is less bothered by those things than the ones before us, and hopefully the next will care even less. I know that's wishful thinking, but maybe in the future as long as we have polar bears teaching college students.
