I got The Painted Bird on my high school college prep reading list. I can't think of a more graphic book than that, but no one knew about it, so when I said it was about a young boy traveling through occupied Poland during WWII, they all thought it was just another war novel.

That was one of my favorite little rebellions when I was younger. I still wonder if my pretentious sophomore English teacher ever found out about it.

Did a little google search myself, seems to be no real instances. There are multiple angry people on forums claiming maybe someone will try to make it part of common core over books they claim are "50 shades of Grey - LIKE," called Dreaming of Cuban & The Bluest Eyes; and there is an instance of a teacher showing the movie in class as a reward for students.

There are some bizarre incidences here and there, including a bizarre crossword puzzle, but no, a school district has never been like, "Screw the classics! 50 Shades of Grey is basically modern day Chaucer baby!"

And, 1 teacher doing something fucking dumb does not equal it being an approved reading list book. That's not the same. That's an obvious and clear outlier.

Eh, my school had a Lit of Evil class (featuring stories about murderous children and rapist priests) and celebrated Banned Book Week by making a mockery of the whole thing.

There's a lot of variability between what one school considers offensive and what another considers good reading.

Tbf i still can't imagine 50 Shades being taught by any of my former teachers but for "shit writing" reasons, not "oh noes offensive" reasons.

I just can't imagine literal porn being deemed ok in a high school. And fanfic nontheless.

    It just isn't sensical.

I love banned books as much as the next Grinch, mind you, it just would be so batcrap insane to have something salacious that also has no literary merit. I mean, Chaucer gets pretty damn dirty too, but it's not fanficcy drivel.

If 50 Shades was written in the 90s, Fabio would have been on the cover.

We had to do a Chaucer presentation as one of the characters in AP English, my teacher was pretty careful about who was allowed to do what. I convinced her I was "mature," enough to do The Wife of Bath, and HOOOO BOY! That is a dirty friggen story.

I had a real good time with that. I practically got dragged away when I got to the point about the chick getting a priest to literally kiss her ash hole. It was the most trouble making I got into, because I'm a goody two shoes.

For my senior year of HS I took a film class that counted as an English class. It was dope.

Watching the godfather movies and other classics > bullshit essays about bad books

If you want dirty, read James Joyce's love letter to Nora Barnacle. That guy was into some weird stuff and found someone that was matched his level of freak.

I ain't gonna link it, but you you can just google it.
