If you just need something for hits you don't need something from your carrier. As for actual phones I'm not sure what the good carrier phones are right now but if you don't hate samsung's phones they prob have their latest phone for the low price of three arms and ten legs.

There are a shit ton of cheap android phones that are cheap and there is no reason to buy them from your carrier. You can prob find something for like $100 or so that would be good enough but I don't know the current market well enough to give you a list of phones.

I suggest doing a quick google search or seeing if someone else responds.

No.... I used to get old phones from friends to use for Turk and other online cash things before I bought a new phone that was of this century. I'd suggest asking around before spending money on something you really wouldn't use often, almost everyone has old phones or even new ones with a cracked screen or some shit that would do what you need.

Google says it is possible to setup iphones with wifi only but you need to plug it into a computer with itunes.

 

I'd get either of the prime el-cheapos

and just use wifi. You can always drop an el-cheapo prepaid sim in them too if you decide you need a backup phone.
