By the time we got engaged, my husband and I had been together for 9 years. So I knew it was coming. I legit went with him to the jeweler for the first few meetings. I came in with a list of "must haves" (3 stones, mom's diamond, etc), "would likes" (two little side stones, antique engraving), "can't stands" (halos, single stones, super tall settings) and talked with the jeweler directly. Hubby was there, and the three of us talked until the jeweler felt she knew my style and then I got kicked out. I couldn't be happier with my ring.

Spoiler: Also, husband proposed with a Tardis ring box, just saying :p

An engagement ring is a huge investment and it's a piece of jewelry she'll be wearing for the rest of her life. I'm all for surprising proposals, but I think the ring shopping should have her input in it. It was actually completely adorkable how I knew when he was going to propose and I still got teary-eyed.

And it's so freaking cool that you love your girl enough to want to make her happy and you're working a second job to do it.

If your jeweler falls through, I've got an amazing one here in Philly!

I second this. My wife actually went with me and picked her diamond out. She didn't see the whole thing put together until I got down on one knee, but that way we both knew she would be happy with it because we only plan on doing it once (no upgrading diamonds etc like some people do).

That's a good point, you should know how your girl feels about upgrades. I do know some people who looked forward to the day they could upgrade, but I was more of a "this is the ring I got married in damnit, it isn't getting messed with" mindset. But your girl, @alomba87 , might be looking forward to a fancy 10th anniversary upgrade, so it's useful info to have now.

 

I quit picking them up. I couldn't handle the disappointment of ALWAYS picking up empty HITs.

 

The $2 (or now $1 pins) never do that.

 

That Tardis box is awesome, give him a slap on the back for that from me. I had considered something similar, as she become a bit of a Whovian after I introduced her to show, but she's not as into it as I am. Either way, I have some planning to do regardless, for the hows and whens. I'd like it to be a least a LITTLE bit of a surprise, but yeah, she's given me a list of what she likes and what she wants and I showed it to my guy. We're meeting tomorrow to see what he was able to find stone-wise. I may ask you about that jeweler, I can fake a work trip to Philly, but not too soon after this last one XD.
Also, thanks! She's happier that I'm spending some of my free time working instead of mindlessly playing games on my computer, so it's a win-win, really.
