Private colleges give out a lot more money though. I have 2 daughters - one just graduated from an out of state private college and my other is in state in a public college. They ended up costing about the same.

 

They give out more money to those that qualify.

So don't be a middle class white male.

I feel that. In SC/GA we would have bought in cash basically. But, Cali is a different animal lol.

We did a hefty down cause we are doing a 15 year loan and this puts our mortgage payment well below renting a house of the same size/ yard. We are avoiding a good chunk of interest got a better rate because of it to boot. So, it paid off to have a good down in this situation.

Oh believe me, as a middle class white female she also lost out on plenty of scholarships. It depends on the school. We toured one college and they basically said that because we made over x amount it was our responsibility to pay full tuition. They also said that those that couldn't afford it and made less would not leave with more than $5000 in loans. We were like WTF?!
