The bills are insane! Steve had a bill, which after insurace was still 86k. I asked that it be itemized, it was for the cardiac ICU "equipment" which is what you pointed out, a ventilator. He was on it for 5 days! And this was post insurance...ughhh. We went bankrupt as the bills were nearly 800k when all was said and done. We had BCBS and he worked 12 hour days for 30-40 days in a row. Luckily I had filled out his new hire work when he had been hired at the company and checked yes for long term disability insurance. But our income was cut by about 70%, because the bulk of what he earned was overtime at double and even triple pay. The LTD was based solely on his 40 hour work week. So we were screwed, we dropped to 1900 a month. Not that I'm not grateful I opted in, but when you earn X amount andthey don't count it it sucks. And of course medicaid, the hospital etc... they wanted our tax papers, not the reality of what was going on in the present time.

You are so lucky. I don't even bother with filing bankruptcy any longer. he is still ill, bills still pile up, so there is no point. His illness financially destroyed us. But luckily, life isn't about having a bunch of money in the end. I wish our citizens felt the need to push for a policy such as what you describe, but we are a pretty torn 50/50 nation.

 

ugh, I'm sorry. I hate that you've had to deal with that. It's really heartbreaking to me how many people have had a similar experience.

The only thing that saved me from this exact situation was that Dave and I were no longer legally married so when I applied for ins they where only looking at my income (we had divorced years before and gotten back together a few months before) Still it was a very difficult time Dave found himself not only solely supporting or kids (something we had always split 50/50) but also trying to cover my personal bills and buy medical equipment and such not covered by ins while taking time off to get me to all my appointments. I originally started turking to help cover the cost of a brace and special shoe I needed. I hope things have gotten better since then and more importantly that your husband is doing better

After all the health insanity, I'm pretty much ok with falling off a cliff or dying in a stalled plane or something because it beats being totally bed bound. I'm a very anxious person (which is part of why I didn't love hiking or stuff like that for years) and I'm always paranoid about getting KO-ed by a rattle snake or something. But honestly, I was bed bound for so many years (and I still have those days now) that I'd rather drop dead doing something awesome and not just sitting in a dark room forever. I'd rather live my life as much as possible and deal with the health issues cause they are gonna be there no matter what, may as well have some fun. That's why I love hiking tbh. I can stop for a nap or hurl my guts out in the woods and it doesn't stop me and nobody is around to look at me like I'm a freak I sometimes go hiking with Matt's coworker that has cystic fibrosis, and it's like the hot mess parade but we damn well make it to thru whatever trail we picked, even if we are alternately dry heaving and huffing inhalers the whole time lol.

Same garbage happened to my parents/family when I was very young. So unacceptably shitty how common it is :/

 

I think you just find a new normal and move on. My kids are fed, my husband is alive, and I live to turk another day. It sounds corny, but you just learn to count your blessings in a different way. My car isn't new, I thrift shop (which I did before), the main difference is our diet. I used to spend 1k a month at the grocer. Now I roast coffee beans. I make more from scratch, I even got rid of the microwave to ensure that we don't cave in and buy so many junk food items. I bought a convection/toaster instead and I love it.

 

@StuffAlleySays This place and mturk in general is full of people who have taken some shitty situations and decided to make the best of it that they can. Your husband and kids are lucky to have someone who is able to keep up a positive attitude and adjust to the crap life throws at us

I love trails and the woods for that reason. I walked around the block a few times today and just hoped that none of my neighbors would see me pass out or have to sit down on the sidewalk!! All good except for the knee that dislocated but that is the story of my life. I dislocated ribs opening the refrigerator last week. That did keep me from eating junk, though. So, there is that
