I've been an IT professional since the early 1990s. I've got stories.

Here's a good one. I was working for a startup and we had a client who was refusing to pay their bill for my time. This was a big deal for a small startup. The sales lead and I drove six hours to spend a week on site, complimentary.

It turned out when they had said "we won't pay you because SirKiwi's system doesn't work", what they really meant was "we won't pay you because we moved the database to a different server, couldn't figure out how to reconfigure the application server to point to the new database server, so we gave up".

I felt a wave of relief when I heard that. No problem, I could fix that in five minutes. Except...

"Yeah, well, we were running out of space on the database server and your system wasn't working, so we kind of like deleted the database".

Slightly more work, but we'll restore from backup. Except...

"Yeah, about that, umm, our tape libraries were full, so...".

In other words, they'd been refusing to pay our bill for six months because they moved the database and broke the system, and now have totally destroyed all the work I did by flat out deleting the database and trashing the backups.

And at no point did they think to call us to say "hey, so if we were to move the database, hypothetically, how do we make the software point to the new location?".

I'm not going to name names, but if you've ever worked for a decent sized company in the United States then this ex-client of mine that was so screwed up probably has data on you.

 

Oh fuck I wrote my time down incorrectly and an extra 1. brb fixing review on TV. My time was 8:49
