All prices come from a chargemaster that is used for quoting insurance companies. They come in with these ridiculous prices and then it gets negotiated down. Most doctors will tell you if you pay cash, it's 50% off.

I had a MRSA get out of control a few years ago and was in like full on quarantine with people in hazmat type shit shit taking care of me. Abscesses were getting out of control, lost over 30 pounds, regular antibiotics weren't working. My mom and wife were crying on the other side of the glass. I thought it was the end for real. Making sure all my affairs were in order, will was updated. It was scary. I ended up getting some third gen antibiotics that didn't even have a name yet. Worked pretty good. I was about 140lbs when I got out, 175 when I went in.

The total bill was $226K. Insurance paid 80% and I negotiated $4K from my health savings account for the rest. Best thing I ever did was stop going with regular heath insurance. It's not for everyone though.

The doc in charge of my FILs care has realized arguing with me is an exercise in insanity and has stopped trying to overpower me.

 

Now if only that crazy woman would do the same

I know about the negotiation thing well. I had to do it for myself back then. I looked up Medicare costs and went from there. I just ended up getting court papers and shit where they wanted to garnish my 19 year old wages after that too and I had to settle on SOMETHING or declare bankruptcy so I ligerally haggled my way down to much less in payment plans (5 bucks a month for each bill lmao) and then wore people down more over the years. It was shit. My parents gave 0 shits.

I got WAY BETTER insurance after that tho and I was paying like 1k a year max in healthcare from then on. Glorious for me and I unfortunately rack up a lot of bills with that stuff still.

I'll let you know. So far it looks like our deductible for his tooth to be pulled is $50 and it's only $50 deductible for the implants he wants too which I feel is pretty good.

Poor Bun has had to deal with my real time meltdown over the lack of soup for the FIL, and you can bet your ass I got him his soup after an insanity campaign.

We may need to “ send the mil on a vacation,” tho.
