It's 1000, 5000, and 10000. 5000 was when I saw the biggest difference with the quality of HITs and the amount of money they paid per HIT. I don't recall seeing much of a difference if any at 100 or 500 but I may be wrong, it's been a while.

There are HIts at night, just not as many as during the day. Also, it's Saturday, so, even fewer HITs on Weekend nights. But:
Getting to 1000 will open up more HITs for you. Also keeping a high approval rating. You can get to 1000 in a week or less depending on how long you're willing to turk per day doing quickie batches. But what you see on Mturk also depends on your approval rating, so since I don't know your approval rating I can't recommend HITs to help you get higher numbers. Set your search filter to HITs you are qualified for, untick masters if it is ticked, set it to search for HITS MOST FIRST and set the amount to $0.01. You should see batches then.

 

Ah yes, you are right, 5 k was significant, personally at ten thou, I noticed no difference

I have that many rejections. I know of other turkers who have a lot more rejections. but this is after close to two million hits. more than that for some people.

FYI, this was after the 10 day probation period was over. The only reason I couldn't get there sooner was their daily HIT limit which sucked. I think it was like 100 a day at the time.

In my humble opinion to much emphasis is but on "getting numbers up"
Every other day there seems to be a forum member asking how to fix their 85 % approval rating that they received doing shit work in a rush to a get a high number of approved HIT's.
IMO do work that pays you well from trusted requesters and your "numbers" will go up and you will actually make a decent wage at the same time.

You are absolutely right. However, the getting numbers up solution is one I recommend for turkers who ask how they can get access to more work faster, or workers with high rejection rates who want to get their approval rating back up quickly. I always suggest avoiding risky requesters which is why I recommend installing Turker View or checking turkopticon BEFORE people dive into batches blindly.

 

Of course, I was just typing my opinion out loud, certainly not challenging any points you may have made, lots of different roads can lead to the same destination
