A friend of mine owns a restaurant, I got my eldest son a job there. One week later, he no longer has a job because of attitude and laziness. He just turned 18. He wants me to help him set up mturk as well, but nope. I AM DONE. I feel your pain.

 

The military doesn't accept people with mental health issues. If he has depression or something similar, moving out and being motivated to make it on his own could help. Don't just dump him out there, but don't coddle him either, because that'll just make him more entitled and justified in saying "see, I can't do it on my own."

 

If he won't work and pay you rent for staying under your roof, then onto the streets with him. Put your foot down about it and he'll stop whining eventually.

 

honestly I could let the financial aspect slide if he was at least useful around the house. With my mobility issues there are so many things that need done around the house and Dave and my youngest both work so don't always have time but it is like pulling teeth to get him to realize anyone but himself has needs (part of his disability to some extent but still very frustrating)

Depending on the mental health issues at hand, you guys probably aren't doing him any favors by enabling him. He has no incentive to change his ways right now, the only thing would be social pressure but that's clearly not a motivator for him so why would he want to stop riding the gravy train? He's going to need to be self-sufficient one day. I have a friend with a relative who is in his late 60's still living with the mother and never had a job and literally no one knows what is going to happen when the mother passes.

Exactly. This all happened just yesterday...he thinks mom is going to continue paying for stuff like I did when he was in school. HA. All his gaming subscriptions and things like that he wants is now out the window.
