He loves history due to an awesome history teacher he had in 8th grade. All the kids loved him. It was a great class. He wants to teach history in a way that makes kids care.

Also Junior College, where some might actually care.

Wages aren't horrible here if you have a Masters Degree, and I told him if he wants to teach he needs to get that so he's planning on it.

 

there's also more to life than money. but yeah a teacher with a masters degree will do quite fine financially

That isn't accurate. The starting wage is $60k here and it quickly goes up.

He honestly wants to be a programmer for video games, but he would rather not have to work for a company since he's been told they don't treat their programmers well. (Wants to write his own then market it.)

So he figures if he teaches and has a Masters he has options. And summers off to program.

I've heard worse life plans from kids, so I'm supporting this one. Teaching at a JC part time can bring in some awesome extra cash, I know several who do it and it is worth it. Not too sure how the video game programming will pan out, but since he'll have other options for income I'm down with that dream.

 

Yeah, California is wrong.

I rent to a bunch of teachers, some new, and I've seen the paycheck stubs. It's higher. Close to $60K as you state.

The not new teachers make bank for this area.

 

lol I did $100 worth yesterday. I regret stopping to make amaretto fruitcake. Course with my internet I'm not sure I could manage them right now, and the stupid brand new inverter I bought doesn't work, so I'm gonna be out of battery in about an hour anyway.

 

I wouldn't consider teachers in California rich by any means but they are paid fairly.

 

It depends where you are. Some school districts pay $100k, some pay $60k, and the average is $40k because the entirety of California isn't like 4 school districts.

Exactly. And adding in advance degrees STRONGLY ups the wages. I've seen into the six figures after a bit of time teaching and doing "extras" with that degree (like, teaching teachers, if you're a Master Teacher).
